Gujarat govt launches suicide helpline

GANDHINAGAR: In a move to bring down the rapidly increasing number of suicides in the state, Gujarat government has launched a round-the-clock suicide prevention and mental distress control helpline. The helpline has been launched with the help of a Mumbai-based NGO.

People experiencing suicidal feelings or those who want to prevent suicide by another person displaying such tendencies can call the toll-free number 1860 266 2345 and 0261 6554050 and seek counseling over the telephone. Professionally trained counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists will help the person in distress and motivate him or her to stay away from negative thoughts.

In the last five years (2008 to 2012) 32,020 persons committed suicide in Gujarat. Figures released by the home department show that Gujarat has the third highest population-to-suicide ratio in the country.
